Shape of Yearning

“Becoming: Aerated Identities” explores the fluid, performative nature of identity in today’s world through an immersive installation of translucent, inflatable masks. Inspired by the ways we compare ourselves to others—whether online or in person—the work speaks to our desire to reinvent ourselves by “trying on” new faces.

Made from lightweight PVC membranes in varying colours and transparencies, these wearable forms temporarily transform the wearer’s appearance, as do the “social masks” we use to conceal, reveal, or reshape aspects of our inner selves. Even as the exterior shifts, the core identity remains, prompting reflection on who we truly wish to be. The inflatables are displayed on geometric stands or scattered across the venue, turning the space into a dynamic, participatory gallery. Visitors are invited to engage directly, experimenting with the masks and exploring the tension between authentic selfhood and constructed personas. The delicacy and translucency of the materials evoke the fragility and impermanence of these identities, much like the fleeting performances they represent.

Designed for openness, adaptability and interaction, “Becoming: Aerated Identities” invites dialogue on self-expression, vulnerability, and transformation in an age where identity is continuously curated, inflated, and deflated.

Triple Layers

Layer 1:
The translucent inflatables evoke fragile, shifting identities shaped by social media and the desire to be seen.
Layer 2:
The work sees identity as a performance influenced by context and trends. Shifting personas prompt reflection on self-authenticity versus self-commodification.
Layer 3:
The work expresses longing for love and connection. The fragile forms mirror vulnerability, urging acceptance of imperfection and authentic emotional courage.
