Overview of the Design
The HKDC Pavilion of DesignInspire 2024, themed ‘Designing Tomorrow Innovating Possibilities,’ presents an immersive journey through the evolution of the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC). The
design concept is rooted in a timeline tunnel—a dynamic, cascading, funnel-shaped structure with folded panels embedded along each arch, symbolizing the progressive transformation of design in Hong Kong. This tunnel narrows, creating a pulling effect that draws visitors into the experience before opening up to introduce HKDC’s latest initiatives, including the DX Design Hub in Sham Shui Po. The striking red-orange aesthetic, synonymous with HKDC, envelops the structure, while the integration of staggered struts reinforces its stability and adds an additional visual dimension. Positioned strategically within DesignInspire 2024, the pavilion seamlessly blends into the broader
exhibition zoning, allowing fluid movement between the BODW and DFA Awards sections.
Creativity and Originality
The pavilion’s design is a striking interpretation of a timeline, transforming a conventional exhibit into a sensory and immersive experience. The use of a cascading funnel shape is a bold and original approach, enhancing spatial perception while reinforcing the theme of time and progress. The interplay between light, shadow, and color accentuates the structure’s dynamism, while the embedded panels serve as interactive storytelling elements. The decision to integrate a void between the twin tunnels introduces an element of openness and accessibility, allowing visitors to flow naturally between different exhibition zones, further elevating the overall creative impact.
Relevance and Problem-Solving
One of the key challenges in large-scale exhibitions is ensuring a cohesive visitor journey while maintaining accessibility. The HKDC Pavilion of DesignInspire 2024 addresses this by adopting a layered approach—both spatially and thematically. The shrinking and expanding effect of the tunnel guides visitors intuitively through the exhibit, reducing congestion while maintaining engagement. Additionally, the pavilion serves as a bridge between HKDC’s past and future, effectively communicating its role in shaping Hong Kong’s design landscape. The structural elements are designed to be modular and adaptive, allowing for efficient assembly and disassembly, thereby optimizing both functionality and sustainability.
