Form and Layout
The design features an inward cascading spiral layout concentric with a central core. This spiral guides visitors through 13 distinct art and design commissions, offering a dynamic and gradual exploration of the exhibits. The layout allows 360-degree access within a glass-roofed hall, providing panoramic views both into and out of the exhibition space. This permeability invites curiosity from outside while offering a contemplative central courtyard experience.
Material Usage and Structural System
Inspired by traditional Chinese timber structures and scaffoldings prevalent in Hong Kong, the space frame uses hollow timber elements reminiscent of bamboo folding techniques, though employing different materials for enhanced strength and flexibility. Hollow spaces are carefully carved and combined with detailed panels to form display walls, shelves, and exhibition surfaces. This meticulous craftsmanship supports a diverse range of exhibits including furniture, fashion, jewelry, digital art, models, and prototypes, all cohesively integrated within the timber framework.
Integration of Traditional and Modern Aesthetics
The design harmonizes the rich cultural heritage of Oriental Hong Kong construction with contemporary artistic expression. The timber space frame’s color and form act as a unifying backdrop for the varied shapes, sizes, colors, and materials of the exhibited pieces. This dynamic juxtaposition reflects Hong Kong’s vibrant cityscape—where tradition and modernity coexist and inspire one another, which was presented as a design concept at the Parisian venue to an international audience. The inward spiral layout metaphorically draws visitors inward, echoing the city’s layered cultural identity and architectural history.
