Thematic Elements: Symbolism and Cultural Legacy
At the heart of the installation is the Dancing Dragon, a dynamic symbol of strength, protection, and auspiciousness. Inspired by the phrases “騰龍飛舞、精神爽利” (Soaring Dragon, Refreshing Spirit) and “舞龍獻瑞、消災降福” (Dancing Dragon Brings Blessings, Dispels Misfortune), the dragon embodies the duality of power and grace. Its sinuous form represents the holy guardian of Chinese mythology, believed to channel energy (qi) and safeguard communities.
Complementing the dragon are Chinese woven bracelets and knots, traditional talismans steeped in meaning. Crafted in festive hues, these intricate designs symbolize prosperity (富貴), peace (平安), fulfillment (稱心), and reunion (團圓). Historically used to ward off evil and attract good fortune, they add layers of cultural depth to the décor, bridging generations through their timeless appeal.
Adding an interactive dimension, windmills punctuate the space, drawing from the legend that spinning their blades “reverses luck” and invites continuous good fortune (運轉乾坤、好運連連). These playful elements invite visitors to engage physically and spiritually with the installation, turning folklore into a shared, joyous ritual.
Design Vision: A Woven Dragon of Festive Splendor
Dressed in the quintessential Lunar New Year palette of red (prosperity), gold (wealth), and silver (harmony), the dragon’s form twists and swirls, visible from all angles to maximize visual impact.
Standing prominently in PMQ’s Courtyard, the dragon’s design balances grandeur and intricacy. Its scales, fashioned from interlaced jute ropes dyed in thematic colors, create a textured, dynamic surface that shimmers under daylight and glows softly by night.
In the Year of the Dragon, PMQ’s Courtyard invites all to witness how heritage, when reimagined with creativity,
