Bridging City and Horizon
The team designed this bridge-station for Køge Nord Station as part of Copenhagen-Ringsted’s New Line expansion. The project unites a historic Danish coastal city divided by parallel transport corridors—railways, motorways, and high-speed lines—with westward urban growth. Spanning 225-300 meters, it serves as both a pedestrian connector and identity landmark.
Køge sits between sea and intense infrastructure. This station bridges both sides, turning a barrier into an inviting urban promenade. A gentle diagonal curve ensures panoramic views, avoiding a tunnel-like feel and enhancing walkability across rail and highway.
The design fuses bridge and dual stations into one fluid element, like a single brushstroke. A double-pitched wooden roof with lamella interiors and aluminum exterior shelters paths, stairs, escalators, drop-offs, bike racks, and waiting areas. Stations emerge as seamless extensions of the bridge’s section.
Wooden lamellas evoke warmth; aluminum withstands winds. The uplifting swoop cradles travelers in reverie toward Copenhagen’s horizon. This holistic form simplifies complexity—one station, not two—while promoting sustainable, pleasurable transit.
